We are Climbing Kilimanjaro

Several folks (mainly non-hikers) will hike Mt. Kilimanjaro this summer. Certainly some of this is for our own personal fun and experience. We are also raising awareness of the Maasai people in Africa and funds to buy an ambulance for their region.

Supporting the Maasai People

Today, an estimated 350,000 Maasai live in Kenya in rural and remote communities. They suffer many common ailments including malaria, typhoid, HIV and TB; traumatic injuries are common as is malnutrition in children. One doctor supports approximately 7,000 villagers, and with no means of transport most do not receive medical care early enough for effective treatment.

This is Staci Hagen from Iowa! I had the amazing priviledge to be a part of this "camp family" with my friend Mirja. Originally this was a celebration for both of us graduating with our master's degrees, but we came part of something much bigger with this group. Sene company was nothing but accomodating and full of energy and smiles.Kili was majestic and awe inspiring and I can't wait for experiences to try to compete with the one we just had.

In the beginning....

5:09 am. We anxiously wait each in our rooms for the departure to the mountain gate at 5:30. Did not sleep well. Dog or whatever else kept howling at the moon and the local rooster got his hours confused waking us up at 3am then again at 4:30. Does he feel the energy in the air-excited and a bit anxious? Each one of us is bringing to the mountain a "load" from the past hoping to release it into a dream - I pray we all make it to the roof of Africa.

Paskal is teaching us the tricks of the game - how to conquer the mountain. It seems like the best approach is to respect it, to give your best and go "pole pole". He added that a 20 year old kid broke the record last year and summited in just under 8hrs, hmmm

It's finally here. Just a few more hours. Operating tomorrow then packing and flying after clinic Thursday. Outpouring of love from my patients, colleagues and friends has given another meaning to what we are doing. I am so thankful to all who donated and believe in this. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.
